The Margarita is the quintessential Mexican Cocktail, primarily because its main ingredient is Tequila, the agave distillate produced in Mexico. It’s precisely the use of this spirit that makes the Margarita a Sour Cocktail. This is a pre-dinner cocktail, perfect to serve as an aperitif in the classic sombrero-shaped glass.

The Margarita Ingredients are Tequila, Triple Sec, and Lime juice. While proportions may vary, we’ll see how to prepare the Original IBA Margarita Recipe (International Bartenders Association), which, interestingly, was briefly removed from the official cocktail list.

Another characteristic that makes the Margarita so famous, similar to the simpler Tequila, Salt, and Lime combination, is the tradition of rimming the glass with salt. The result is a delicate balance of flavors that can only be fully appreciated by drinking directly from the glass, without a straw. Sip it and imagine walking through the streets of a Mexican city, surrounded by music and colors, for a complete experience.

While tracing the origin of any cocktail is complicated, the Margarita’s history is even more mysterious. The most credible theory suggests it was created for Marjorie King, an American actress who was intolerant to traditional spirits. However, who actually created it remains a mystery, with only the time period – the 1930s – being somewhat certain. While the truth may be hard to verify, what’s clear is that the Margarita is now the most popular Triple Sec Cocktail worldwide.

Among other Aperitif Cocktails, we recommend trying the Cuba Libre, the Manhattan, and the Martini, all very simple to prepare at home.

  1. To prepare the Margarita, start by putting ice in a sombrero-style glass (also known as a margarita glass) and let it chill for 2 minutes. Once chilled, remove the ice and run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass, then dip it in salt, shaking off any excess.
  2. In a shaker filled with ice, combine the strained lime juice, Triple Sec, and Tequila. Shake vigorously for 12 seconds. Strain the cocktail into the prepared glass, filtering out the ice, and serve immediately. Finally, remember to download our App with exclusive content and fewer ads!

Variations and Alternatives

Margarita can also be prepared with lemon juice instead of lime juice – it will still be excellent, though less traditional.

Tips

For a sweeter cocktail, add a bit more triple sec, as this is the ingredient that provides sweetness.

Storage

Margarita should be enjoyed immediately. Like all cocktails, any type of storage is not recommended.
