  1. To prepare Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies, beat room temperature butter with sugar using an electric mixer.
  2. Once you obtain a light and fluffy mixture, add the eggs and beat until well combined.
  3. Add the food coloring, starting with 10 drops and keeping in mind that it will darken when adding cocoa powder, and the vanilla extract. Mix well with a wooden spoon until evenly distributed.
  4. Add the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda, followed by a few drops of lemon juice. Mix quickly, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  5. After the resting time, take portions of dough about the size of a walnut and roll them between your palms to form balls.
  6. Roll them in powdered sugar and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving plenty of space between each cookie.
  7. Bake the crinkle cookies in the oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 15 minutes, letting them cool before serving.

Variations and Alternatives

Red food colorings are usually not suitable for vegetarians as they are often derived from cochineal insects. Please check the label and consider using a natural alternative if needed.

Tips

We recommend adjusting the food coloring amount by eye, but avoid using too much as it could give the cookies a bitter taste.

Storage

Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies can be stored in a tin box for up to one week.
