Among all the Typical Sicilian Desserts, the Pan d’Arancio is perhaps one of the least known. It’s a real shame because the idea of preparing a cake with whole oranges is quite original. That’s right, you heard correctly: the Sicilian Orange Cake is prepared simply by blending all the ingredients in a mixer, and the star ingredient is the Orange.

This aromatic citrus fruit must, of course, be organic and with untreated peel to ensure you can enjoy the Pan d’Arancia with complete peace of mind. Like many Sicilian Desserts, this easy and quick cake is prepared with just a few simple ingredients that are easy to find: Flour, Sugar, Butter, and Eggs are all you need to prepare the Pan d’Arancio with the Original Recipe.

Ideal to serve as a Sunday dessert, the Pan d’Arancio can be the perfect conclusion to your lunch. Among other Sicilian recipes, we recommend trying the Pasta alla Norma, the Orange and Fennel Salad with the Original Sicilian Recipe, perhaps served as an appetizer, and finally, the inevitable Sicilian Cannoli.

  1. To prepare the Orange Cake (Pan d’Arancio), put sugar, flour, oil, milk, eggs and the orange cut into pieces (remove any seeds if present) in your food processor.
  2. Blend until you get a smooth and creamy mixture, then finally add the baking powder.
  3. Pour the mixture into a 26 cm (10-inch) diameter cake pan lined with parchment paper and level the surface.
  4. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 80 minutes. Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
  5. Brush the surface with orange marmalade and serve your cake as a dessert or for breakfast, as it’s commonly enjoyed in Italian households. Finally, remember to download our App with exclusive content and fewer ads!

Variations and Alternatives

You can similarly prepare a Lemon Cake: in this case, however, we recommend cutting the fruit in half and removing any seeds before blending.

Tips

If you don’t have orange marmalade, you can simply dust the surface with powdered sugar.

Storage

The Orange Cake can be stored for 2-3 days under a glass cake dome.
